In August 2013, Cutler hosted a series of performance walks through Vancouver’s Chinatown exploring the enduring relationship that civilizations have had with salt. The three walks were focused on Herbal Medicine, Food Preservation and Crystal Structures. Each walk began with a salt tasting and discussion of its formative role in history from China and India to Timbuktu. Meandering through the neighbourhood, Cutler hosted local shopkeepers and guests to speak about different aspects of sodium chloride whether as a flavour, a remedy or a molecular formation. Cutler then produced a new video work documenting the experience of these original walks. The work has screened at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in collaboration with Access Gallery and VIVO Media Arts Centre, Vancouver, BC.
